The Starless City
A Fantasy story by Eleanor Vance on Inkrune.
Kael’s revelation ignited a fire in Elara. The stars weren’t gone; they were imprisoned. The perpetual, soulless light that bathed Aethel in its unblinking glare was more than just a convenience; it was a cage. The city’s founders, in their quest for order and productivity, had erected a network of 'Lumin-Relays' that projected a light-saturated veil into the upper atmosphere, effectively erasing the cosmos from view. To restore the night, they would have to dismantle the system from within. Their quest began in the Undercity, a labyrinth of forgotten tunnels and rusted machinery that hummed with the city’s geothermal energy. It was a world away from the pristine towers above, a place where dissent simmered in the shadows.
They sought an old engineer named Jax, a disgraced member of the very team that had built the Lumin-Relays. They found him in a makeshift workshop, surrounded by scavenged parts and flickering schematics. He was a creature of the dark, his eyes accustomed to the gloom, and he scoffed at their youthful idealism. "You can't just 'turn it off'," he rasped, his voice a gravelly mix of cynicism and regret. "The Core network is self-sustaining. It feeds on the city's own ambition." But Elara showed him the reflection in her crystalline basin, and for the first time in decades, Jax saw a glimmer of the night sky he had helped to steal. He saw the ghost of the man he used to be, a man who had once dreamed of the stars. With a heavy sigh, he agreed to help, his old hands tracing the dusty blueprints of the city's light-prison. Their first target was a primary relay hidden beneath the grand plaza, a place where the city's elite gathered for their meaningless celebrations. It was a high-risk gamble, but it was the only way. To bring back the stars, they first had to plunge a part of the city into true, untainted darkness.
