The Art of Creative Writing
A Non-Fiction article by Eleanor Vance on Inkrune.
Creative writing is not merely about stringing words together; it's about breathing life into ideas. The first step is to observe. The world is a library of stories waiting to be told. Pay attention to the mundane, for it often holds the extraordinary. A conversation overheard in a cafe, the way light filters through leaves, the expression on a stranger's face—these are the seeds of your next narrative.
Secondly, embrace the mess. Your first draft is not meant to be a masterpiece. It's a playground, a sandbox for your imagination. Give yourself permission to write badly. The magic happens in the revision process, where you chisel away at the raw stone of your initial thoughts to reveal the sculpture within. Don't be afraid to cut, to rewrite, to start over. Every word should serve a purpose. If it doesn't, it must go.
Finally, read voraciously. Read within your genre and outside of it. Reading is the whetstone that sharps your own writer's tools. Analyze what makes a story work. How does the author build suspense? How do they create characters that feel real? By deconstructing the work of others, you learn to construct your own.
