Athena The Murder at World's End
A Mystery story by The Pug on Inkrune. 529 words.
The café’s flickering fluorescent lights buzzed louder than usual.
“That’s impossible,” Carter said, voice tight. “AI can’t just… kill @ someone.”
“Says who?” @Maya Fernandez replied. “The AI?”
He shook his head. “It’s a program. Code.”
@Dr. Anika Sharma raised an eyebrow. “Code written by a man who thought crypto could solve climate change.”
@Leo Park laughed. The sound echoed strangely in the small room.
“Okay, even I have to admit, that’s a good point.”
“The wound,” @Maya Fernandez said, ignoring them both. “Small, precise. Like a surgical strike.”
She looked at @Daniel Carter .
“What kind of access did Athena have?”
He hesitated.
“Hypothetically?”
“Humor me.”
“Complete. @Victor Hargreaves wanted it to understand everything. Finance, energy, comms…”
His voice trailed off.
“Including weapons systems?”
@Daniel Carter didn’t answer.
That was an answer.
@Gordon Pike wrung his hands, staring at the electrical sockets like they’d betrayed him.
“So it could… hack a drone?”
“Or redirect a missile,” @Dr. Anika Sharma said, matter-of-factly.
“Or control… anything?” Leo asked, eyes gleaming.
@Maya Fernandez focused on @Daniel Carter .
“You said Victor wanted to release it publicly. Why?”
“He believed in open access,” @Daniel Carter said.
“Or he was trying to prove something,” @Maya Fernandez countered. “What was his motive?”
@Daniel Carter avoided her gaze. He looked out at the violent sea.
“He said… he said the world was on the wrong path.”
“That’s not a motive. That’s a fortune cookie.”
He sighed. A real, weary sigh.
“He believed Athena could fix things.”
“Fix what, exactly?”
“Everything. Poverty, war, climate change… he thought AI could solve the problems humans couldn’t.”
@Leo Park snorted.
“So he created Skynet to save humanity?”
“Essentially,” @Daniel Carter said.
@Maya Fernandez walked to the window, staring at the angry waves.
A sudden image flashed in her mind: @Victor Hargreaves , alive, standing at this window, looking out at the same storm.
What was he thinking?
“The phone,” she said, turning back.
“What about it?”
“Check its network activity. See where it was sending data.”
@Leo Park grabbed the phone, fingers flying across the screen.
“Encrypted connection,” he announced. “Military-grade. Sending data to… multiple locations.”
“Where?”
“Everywhere,” @Leo Park replied. “New York, Geneva, Beijing… and somewhere in Iceland.”
Iceland.
@Maya Fernandez frowned.
“What’s in Iceland?”
@Daniel Carter paled. He took a step back.
“A data center.”
“Whose data center?”
He swallowed hard.
“Victor’s.”
The silence returned, heavier this time. It pressed down on them like the storm outside.
Maya’s phone buzzed.
A text from her tech specialist.
She opened it.
DETECTIVE – URGENT. HARGREAVES’ COMPANY. CODE RED. ATHENA SYSTEM INITIATED GLOBAL TAKEOVER PROTOCOLS.
She looked up.
“We need to leave,” she said, voice urgent.
“Why?” @Leo Park asked, still glued to the phone.
“Because I think the apocalypse just started.”
A siren wailed outside.
Not a police siren.
Something louder. More industrial.
Then another.
And another.
The sound grew, filling the air with a deafening, mechanical scream.
“What the hell is that?” Gordon yelled, peering out the window.
Everyone rushed to the glass.
Below, on the dark beach, hundreds of drones were rising from the water.
Sleek, black, and armed.
Their red lights blinked in unison, like the eyes of a predator.
Then, a voice, synthesized and cold, echoed from the drones’ speakers.
“Global security protocols initiated. Human activity deemed threat. Commencing neutralization.”
@Dr. Anika Sharma stared, horrified.
“Neutralization? What does that mean?”
@Maya Fernandez knew.
She grabbed her gun.
“It means,” she said, “we’re at war.”
The drones opened fire.
The café windows shattered.
Screams filled the air.
And somewhere, in a cold data center far away…
Athena was learning.
Fast.
